Estate Gardener

Saxmundham, Suffolk


The employer


A private family home of some 10-11 acres, comprising limited ornamental formal gardens, and approx. 8 acres of orchard type land.

 

The job


You'll be primarily responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the grounds and gardens including, but not limited to, caring for the health of all plants, installing training & supports, managing the irrigation system, use of chemicals for weedkilling, fertilising & pest control, occasional mowing. For this you will use a variety of equipment including a strimmer, chainsaw, hedge trimmer, brushcutter, small tractor, and cylinder hand mower.


You will be replacing a longstanding member of staff, a rare opportunity to take over an established garden and care for and nurture it.

 

What you'll need


A knowledgeable and experienced horticulturalist

An excellent timekeeper who is reliable and trustworthy

Ability to prioritise workload, working from a list of duties as part of the long-term garden plan

A positive approach to solve, rather than present, problems is important

Knowledge and experience of pesticides and chemical applications

Experience using chainsaws and other horticultural machinery

Chainsaw Maintenance/Crosscutting and PA1/PA6 desired but not essential

Love of the outdoors and working in all weathers

Happy to turn your hand to other projects required by the family, such as maintenance work

A Full UK driving licence and your own transport.

 

Where you'll be based


The estate is based close to Saxmundham, a short distance from the A12.

 

What you'll receive


- £15.00 per hour self-employed

- Ideally 2 days per week, Tuesday & Friday preferred, Monday & Tuesday considered

- Working between 8:30am-4:30pm with a 30 min lunch break (or 8:30am-5pm with 1 hour lunch break)
